Last month, Dr. Ron Gehl, Assistant Professor and Extension Specialist for Soils and the Avery County Cooperative Extension staff put in a research demonstration at Dick Daniels Farm in Newland. This study is comparing Avail impregnated fertilizer with conventional fertilizer.
Avail is a Maleic Itaconic Copolymer that is designed to inhibit or reduce phosphate fertilizer fixation; it has been shown to have beneficial effects on row crops. With the increased cost of fertilizer, this might be a method to increase the efficiency of the phosphate uptake of the plants.
We planted plots with and without Avail. The P rates used at Dick Daniels were 0, 150, 225, and 300 lbs P2O5/ac. The fertilizer we used was 0-45-0; all rates were applied
We plan on visiting this site on the Avery County Cooperative Extension Summer tour in July.
