The Use of Avail in Fraser Fir Production

Last month, Dr. Ron Gehl, Assistant Professor and Extension Specialist for Soils and the Avery County Cooperative Extension staff put in a research demonstration at Dick Daniels Farm in Newland. This study is comparing Avail impregnated fertilizer with conventional fertilizer.
Avail is a Maleic Itaconic Copolymer that is designed to inhibit or reduce phosphate fertilizer fixation; it has been shown to have beneficial effects on row crops. With the increased cost of fertilizer, this might be a method to increase the efficiency of the phosphate uptake of the plants.

We planted plots with and without Avail. The P rates used at Dick Daniels were 0, 150, 225, and 300 lbs P2O5/ac. The fertilizer we used was 0-45-0; all rates were applied with and without AVAIL (total of 7 treatments). All fertilizer was banded with the seedling at planting (6-10" deep). Plots were three rows wide and the length of the entire block. There were three replicates of each treatment.

We plan on visiting this site on the Avery County Cooperative Extension Summer tour in July.
